The launch video has been converted to DVD and includes both video of the launch as well as the commissioning ceremony. The above link provides you with a few second snippet of the video. The entire video is about 11 minutes long. It may take a little while to load so a little patience is required.
Copies of the video are available for $20/each. This cost covers the cost of the film conversion, duplication costs including blank media, as well as postage. Tapes will be sent via US Mail. Payment should be sent to:
Al Patzke
709 Oak Lane
Grapevine, TX 76051
Any monies in excess of the actual cost of converting, duplicating, and mailing will be added to the Reunion account. We aren't looking to profit from anyone's generosity. This includes the cost of converting the video from 8mm to VHS and the cost associated with acquiring the video editing software required to render from VHS to Computer Video. As of 5/14/03 I have invested $250 into this project and as of, May, 2004 I have recovered $160.
The video of the launch of the USS John Marshall (SSBN-611) has been converted from 8mm color film onto VHS Video.
The video shows the launch from many perspectives. Shown from the dock as well as from the boat and from the sail. The video clearly shows Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kennedy and the breaking of the champagne bottle by Mrs. Kennedy. Pictures of the crew at quarters are also on this video. The complete video is approximately 7 minutes long.
As can be expected, an 8mm video from July 15, 1961 isn't as good as modern film however, it is in surprisingly good condition. There are parts that are over- and under-exposed as well as parts that suffer from focus. I was really impressed at how many angles are shown as well as the various perspectives shown.
